Work on developing, designing, installing, operating and documenting engineered Industrial Fluid Piping Systems
Support the mechanical design efforts of the various SRF, cryomodule and particle accelerator beamline sub systems and equipment with emphasis on fluid systems engineering support.
Design, specify, procure and oversee the installation and operation of Low Conductivity Water (LCW) cooling, Radioactive Water (RAW) cooling, compressed air, and nitrogen systems for various particle accelerator devices, radiofrequency (RF) accelerator equipment, and laser systems.
Responsible for modification and maintenance of primary LCW systems, including the addition of new process HVAC equipment (i.e. Chillers) for the various particle accelerator experiment process cooling applications.
Conceptual and analytical calculations, system design and specification, piping system start up and commissioning activities
Preparing requisitions and overseeing contracts for the installation and maintenance of these systems in accordance with Federal Government requirements.
Responsible for preparation of engineering note binder for each system for the purpose of documenting design, installation, and operation system parameters.
Provide detailed engineering designs of process water cooling systems/equipment, and modifications to existing equipment.
Developing specifications and documenting existing systems
Assisting Operations in performing loop tuning, start up, commissioning and troubleshooting of systems and general system support.
Provide ongoing system optimization and continuous improvement initiatives for systems within regulatory and process limits, and independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to assignments, following ASME Code standards, specifically B31.3 ASME for Pressure Piping to perform stress calculations, thermal analysis and piping flow rate calculations.
Direct activities of drafter, designers and technicians on assigned projects and work under the direction of a more senior engineer or scientist to perform research and carry out fluid piping system design and analysis.
Must have BS in Mechanical Engineering and minimum of 15 years of field/plant work experience which includes academic experience in Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics and experience or course work in the design, installation, operation and documentation of large-scale water cooling systems.
Minimum of 10 years experience with fluid system design in particle accelerator applications
Must have experience performing as a Facility or Operations Engineer in the areas of fluid piping system design, analysis, and testing in a research and development (R&D) environment, including experience leading the engineering design and development of medium/large size engineering projects (i.e. $150k - $1M).
Experience with design of cooling fluid systems for radioactive and cryogenic environments is highly desirable.
Previous experience with design of piping systems for both compressible and incompressible fluids; application of B31.3 ASME Code for pressure piping, ASME B31.9 Building Services Piping
Training/experience in pump sizing (particularly centrifugal pumps), heat exchangers (plate/frame and tube/shell), valve sizing, valve controlling hardware; and specifiying controls and instrumentation.
Must be experienced with computational fluid dynamics software for performing piping network flow analysis, as well as stress and thermal computations.
Experience with the following:
Authoring engineering note and specification documentation
Developing Project Management/Timeline Spreadsheet or Gantt Chart
Creating and interpreting Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and flow schematics, (using instrumentation symbol standards)
Reading and developing construction/installation drawings
Developing weld documents specifying welding process and procedure according to ASME B31.3 Process Piping code and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX: Welding and Brazing Qualifications
Creating equipment parts lists and operation/design specs for fluid system equipment (i.e. Pump, Heat Exchanger, Refrigeration Chiller, Temperature Control Valve, PID Controller, Resistivity Analyzer
Developing Fluid System Operation Procedures
Proficient with some/all of the following computing software:
